Why the smell?

If your artificial grass smells strongly of dog pee it could be caused by a number of reasons. The most common reason is that people install latex backed artificial grass, which they buy thinking pet friendly means dog urine friendly. Yes the urine won't stain the grass but it will cause terrible odours from dog or fox urine.
Below are some of the common reasons that you have strong dog urine odour
- You have a dog or a dog urinates on the astroturf
- The wrong type of fake lawn has been fitted, most artificial grasses sold are pet friendly latex backed, unfortunately this will smell badly. You need PU backed grass, antibacterial mesh backed or grass manufactured with Pureti.
- The weed membrane has been installed directly under the grass causing pooling of water and urine, it should be fitted way under the stone sub-base on top of the earth
- Sand has been used in some part of the installation, this allows urine to crystallise and it's uric acid crystals will remain under the grass causing odours which won't go away
- The installation doesn't have a fast draining stone sub-base
- The grass isn't hosed down regularly
- Blocked pre punched drainage holes
